What we do in the Transitional Five-Year Old program
Kindergarten readiness skills are taught during the 3 ½ hour day and include:
Social and Emotional Skills:
- Taking turns and cooperating
- Respecting others
- Working in a group and independently
- Sharing materials
- Following directions
- Initiating activities
- Completing a task
Math Skills:
- Naming and ordering numbers 0-20
- Counting objects up to 20
- Making comparisons of more and less
- Sorting objects
- Performing basic addition and subtraction
- Printing numerals 1-20
Early Reading Skills:
- Identifying letters, consonant, and vowel sounds
- Rhyming, opposites, and sequencing
- Recognizing basic sight words
Large and Fine Motor Skills:
- Throwing and catching a ball
- Riding a pedaled toy
- Using a balance beam
- Jumping, hopping, climbing, and running
- Manipulating small objects
- Cutting, drawing, coloring, and printing
- Molding play dough and painting
Art Skills:
- Exploring art through many art mediums
- Developing art appreciation
- Singing and movement
- Playing of basic instruments
Themes explored in the T-5 class may include, but are not limited to: famous artists (Georgia O’Keefe, Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock), life cycles, bears, the farm, the zoo, pirates, seasons, holidays, Arctic life, Chinese New Year, Mexico (introducing basic Spanish), insects, ocean animals, Earth Day, recycling, castles/knights and authors (Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle). To further enhance the T-5 themes, numerous field trips occur in the downtown Frederick area and beyond. Examples are: C. Burr Artz Library (monthly), fire station, Rose Hill Manor, Weinberg Center, Frederick County Historical Society, the bakery, Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, Frederick Visitor’s Center and Catoctin Creek Nature Center, as well as a school visit from the traveling planetarium.
